"Smells Like Nostalgia" (闻乡愁)

Liu Dao

Fresh cut grass. Salty ocean air. Your grandmothers house. Does a certain smell transport you back to a nostalgic memory of youth? This phenomemon causes old memories to surface and emotions to rise. Granted some memories you probably don’t want triggered. Olfactory memory is the recollection of memories via smell. Science has proven that our memories and sense of smell are intricately intertwined throughout our brains. Therefore it becomes a powerful tool to remember memories, especially as a person grows older and memories fade. A series of receptors in the brain are responsible including the olfactory bulb. The receptor is also apart of the limbic system (AKA your emotions) which explains how some smells might cause a rush of emotional memories. Scent memories are not always pleasant but they have left an impact on you whether you like it or not. So remember, your nose is not only used for the present but also the past.
