"Make It Rain" (求雨)

Liu Dao

It sounds odd but, just in case you weren’t already aware, people can actually make it rain. It’s called cloud seeding and it was discovered by Vincent Schaefer in July of 1946. Cloud seeding is still not officially recognized as anything beyond quack-science by several large research organizations, but that doesn’t stop anyone from having a go. The People’s Republic of China operates the largest seeding operation in the world, blasting chemicals such as silver iodide, potassium iodide and dry ice into certain sections of the upper atmosphere where there are clouds between −7 and −20 °C (the sweet spot). I hope it’s true. I hope the next step is making storms. Maybe wars won’t be fought with guns and bombs 50 years from now, but with hurricanes. I’m sure there are plenty of perfectly splendid humanitarian uses for weather control... but that’s not how we'll use it. What fun would that be?
