Danny Lyon’s documentary photography is defined by an empathetic and intimate vision that revolutionized practices in photojournalism in the 1960s. Immersing himself fully within the lives and cultures of his subjects, Lyon’s work offers a personal intimacy, an insider’s view, and a deep sense of understanding of communities that are often outside of the mainstream—from 1960s counterculture groups, to groups and individuals striving for social change. Drawing from SAM’s permanent collection, this exhibition features photographs from three of Lyon’s seminal bodies of work: street photography from his travels in Mexico and South America; Conversations with the Dead, documenting the lives of incarcerated men in Texas prisons; and his celebrated series The Bikeriders, recording his years as a member of the Chicago Outlaw Motorcycle Club.
