What does it mean to be family? Biology is only part of the story. Families come in all shapes and sizes. Family bonds are the building blocks for all other ways we organize ourselves. All people share the common concern of creating families, but the ways in which families are structured are different in different cultures. As families move to new environments or encounter new ways of making a living, family structures and practices often change.
This exhibition and associated programming bring together The Field Museum, the Filipino American Historical Society of Chicago, and the Trickster Art Gallery to explore how the Filipino American and Native American communities are responding to recent changes in their ties to homeland, community identity, and shifting gender roles. Members of these communities together with Field Museum public audiences are invited to participate in cultural encounters to share perspectives and cultural responses that help people find a balance between continuing traditions of family and creating new practices that can maintain or strengthen generational ties. These encounters will be documented to create additional exhibit content.
We Are Family is presented in conjunction with Chicago’s Families, a collaborative project of the Chicago Cultural Alliance.
