George Vamvakidis and Stathis Panagoulis inaugurated the Breeder in November
2002.
The gallery represents a group of international and Greek, emerging and established
artists. It aims to facilitate the long- term development of their careers, liaising with
international galleries, curators, institutions, museums and collectors. Since 2002, The
Breeder has successfully introduced select international artists and projects to the
Athenian public, while simultaneously presenting Greek artists to the contemporary
arts community abroad. Over the last ten years The Breeder has been a pioneer in the
development of the contemporary art scene in Athens.
Gallery artists have been included in a number of internationally renowned exhibitions,
such as the Venice Biennale (2013 & 2011); the New Orleans Biennale (2008); the Athens
Biennale (2007, 2009 and 2011), the Istanbul Biennale (2011); the Cairo Biennale
(2010); along with exhibitions at prestigious museums and institutions such as the
New Museum and PS1 in New York, LA MOCA in Los Angeles, CAC Cincinnati
in the USA; La Conservera and MUSAC in Spain; Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, GAK
Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst, Bremen, Groninger Museum and the Stedelijk
Museum Schiedam in the Netherlands; Kunsthalle Zurich in Switzerland to name a
few. The gallery also participates in the following art fairs during the year: Frieze Art
Fair London and Frieze Art Fair New York, LISTE the Young Art Fair in Basel, Art HK
and Abu Dhabi Art.
The Breeder works to cultivate strong relationships with galleries world wide,
promoting artistic exchange and project collaboration.

In September 2008 the gallery moved to a larger site in Metaxourgio, the up and
coming arts area of downtown Athens. The gallery’s new premises are comprised of a
masterfully renovated ice cream factory from the 1970s. It hosts over 550 sq meters of
exhibition space.
Following the Greek financial meltdown in 2009 and the economical crisis that has
followed, one of the main goals of The Breeder is to dynamically promote a select
group of emerging Greek artists on the global arena.
On June 2013 The Breeder inaugurated a second gallery space in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
