School of Visual Arts presents “MFA Computer Art 30th Anniversary Exhibition and Celebration,” an exhibition of work by department alumni. The exhibition is on view Saturday, October 22, through Wednesday, November 30, at the SVA Flatiron Gallery, 133/141 West 21st Street, New York City.Founded in 1986 to encourage creative self-expression using computers and emerging technologies, MFA Computer Art graduates continue to invent new forms of artistic expression and contemporary art. Early explorations in digital art, animation and programming have expanded to include the fields of motion graphics, interactive media, digital sculpture and virtual reality.With more than 1,000 MFA Computer Art graduates, the exhibition celebrates the accomplishments of just a small fraction of its alumni. Select projects include the evolving Every Icon by John F. Simon, Jr. (1989), an animated LED light sculpture by Erwin Redl (1995), digital paintings by Alicia Martin (2013) and an Arctic-inspired digital sculpture installation by José Carlos Casado (2001). There will also be screenings of eight Student Academy Award-winning films and other notable animation shorts created by MFA Computer Art alumni, as well as screenings of thesis projects and a sneak peek of a documentary about the department on Friday, October 28.The MFA Computer Art department emphasizes creative experimentation and a multidisciplinary approach to making art with computers and emerging technologies. Dedicated to producing digital artists of the highest caliber, the department guides each student in the development of a personal artistic style through a course of study that is individually tailored to meet his or her needs.
