Throughout history, artists and scientists have sought to understand what it means to be human. The Science Museum’s new Robots exhibition explores our deep-seated drive to recreate ourselves, revealing the remarkable 500-year story of humanoid robots.
Set in five different periods and places, the exhibition features a unique collection of over 100 robots, from a 16th-century mechanical monk to robots from science fiction and modern-day research labs. Twelve of the robots will be working models and you may even get the chance to interact with one.
Other highlights include:
An articulated iron manikin from the 1500s
Cygan, a giant 1950s Italian robot with a glamorous past
One of the first walking two-legged robots
Book your ticket now for this intriguing exhibition and discover just how robots and society have been shaped by religious belief, the industrial revolution, 20th century popular culture and our dreams of the future.
Join our Kickstarter campaign to rebuild the UK's first robot
Eric, the UK’s first robot, holds a unique place in our history. He is everything we now imagine a robot to be – a talking, moving mechanical person. Originally built in 1928 by Captain Richards & A.H. Reffell, Eric was one of the world’s first robots. Built less than a decade after the word robot was first used, he travelled the globe with his makers but then disappeared, seemingly forever.
With your support, we will rebuild Eric and save him for the nation as part of our permanent collection – but only after he has once more travelled the world as part of the exhibition’s international tour.
