Faith in Birmingham

(Friday) (Sunday)

A new gallery exploring faith in the city. Discover the many faiths that make up Birmingham’s rich and diverse community.

Explore how different faiths have influenced and shaped the city. Uncover sacred objects used in religious practice and explore the role of faith in places of worship at home, and within our journey through life.

Objects on display include the Birmingham Qur’an – recently identified as one of the oldest surviving copies of the Qur’an in the world (on display from 5 February until 5 August 2016 only). The Qur’an is loan from the University of Birmingham’s Cadbury Research Library.

Over 70 objects will be on display, representing six different faiths, including the iconic Sultanganj Buddha, and a historic Sikh temple token, and personal objects from people of faith across the city.

The gallery development involved nearly a year of consultation with faith groups and communities across Birmingham. The groups and individuals identified objects in our collection, and from further afield, to enable them to tell stories about their beliefs to other people.

Visitors are invited to share their thoughts and contribute to an evolving dialogue around faith practice.
