Lucy McLauchlan: Marking Shadows

(Friday) (Saturday)

This September Lazarides Rathbone presents Marking Shadows, Lucy McLauchlan's third solo exhibition with the gallery.

After spending a significant amount of time amid the greener sides of Birmingham the expressive artist has developed her approach and intervention with the natural world, resulting in a unique showcase of abstract naturalistic canvases alongside an organic installation display.

Marking a departure from familiar urban landscapes and public commissions, McLauchlan endevours to reverse roles by allowing the natural environment to steer her artistic direction and embark on an explorative mark-making journey. The UK-based artist has continued to work outside among natural elements following her travels across America earlier this year, creating a new body of artwork as a direct response to local parklands, tracing the contours and texture of the trees as if it was the last chance to experience these inner city woods.

With a nod towards environmental issues and man's permanent interference with nature McLauchlan's compelling work is reminiscent of her engagement with the local community, uncovering moments where the two worlds collide and escaping walls of concrete and steel.
