Wildscreens-Julie C. Fortier

(Samstag) (Samstag)

Julie C. Fortier has for several years been reflecting on the passage of time, the presence of emptiness and the notion of erasure. Her experiences with and research into reality explore attrition (loss of time, loss of energy, non productivity, loops, erasure) and lacunar spaces (blank screens, empty space, memory blanks etc.).

Recently the artist has been exploring the world of smells and flavours in order to examine notions such as the ephemeral, the passing of time, the presence of emptiness and memory.

For this exhibition « Wildscreens » Julie C. Fortier presents a series of white paper rectangles. Impregnated with different odours, these monochromes become the receptacles for mental projections and visual reminiscences which go beyond the visible. The smells, which encourage contemplation and spark personal reflection, are veritable catalysers of memories.

The artist accompanies these screens with brief autobiographical details which present the viewer with snippets from her olfactive memory. Our olfactive sense’s power of memory recall fills these white spaces with a new absence.

The works in this exhibition free us from time and space. Working with an evanescent and subjective material, Julie C. Fortier coaxes us on a journey towards an intimate aesthetic.
