Josef Bauer (b. 1934 in Wels) has developed in his art a unique sculptural idiom to bridge the gulf between bodies, objects and script. In his work series entitled Taktile Poesien he combines language signs with objects and interweaves these elements in space. His interest in the specifics of the perception of image and text and their concrete relationship to reality goes back to the 1950s. What links him to the neo-avant-garde of the 1950s and 1960s, the Wiener Gruppe and the exponents of Concrete Poetry in Germany is the reference to Wittgenstein’s critique of language. That said, Bauer is unique in the consistency with which he has realised language signs in the spatial dimension, combining it with bodily interaction.
