A new installation of Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts and cuttings from the Fitzwilliam collection in Galleries 6 and 32. The cuttings (pages or details from large medieval books) in Gallery 6 table cases illustrate winter feasts: the birth and early life of Christ, as well as the Feast of St Nicholas. Originating in Italy and Spain, these sumptuously decorated works were produced between the early fourteenth and the late seventeenth century. Focusing on developments and changes in production and use of books over 900 years, the display in Gallery 32 gives visitors the chance to see treasures from the medieval collection, including bibles, personal prayer books, pages from legal texts and astrological treatises.
