A reception celebrating the artist, his work and his extraordinary teaching will be held on Thursday, October 10, 6:00 – 8:00pm. The exhibition will run through November 1.DeFrank has prepared the following statement about his work:"I’m a queer man making queer paintings in a post-gay art world. We are at a crossroads with the heterosexualization of gay culture. Assimilation dampens identity; the shift of societies (some, not all) to integrate gay folks and their culture is a loss as well as a gain. There is a cost for having a more homogeneous world, a more homogenous art world, a blandness that feels very dry. Queer demands to be seen."The paintings share a dandified staging, a restrained fantastical flamboyance, with a modernist sensibility. I am synthesizing abstraction and a cartoony queer comic figuration. This dualism in the paintings contributes something that is secondary to the work but something it couldn’t exist without. That tension keeps me on the edge."The exhibition will include an overview of the artist’s work on the window monitors. For more information please email [email protected].
