EXTRAORDINAIRE!Unknown works from Swiss psychiatric institutions around 1900 – augmented with works from Austria
(Thursday) — (Sunday)
A unique project at the Zurich Hochschule der Künste took stock for the first time of all artistic works created around 1900 in Switzerland’s cantonal institutions of mental care. A selection of these works is on view in this exhibition. Created with total dedication and remarkable technical and artistic competence, these works were seen by their creators as their contribution to public life, as the product or the expression of their thoughts, as a critique of the institution where they lived or as an escape from a monotonous day-to-day routine.
The exhibition will be shown at three museums in three different countries, at the Sammlung Prinzhorn in Heidelberg (11 October 2018 – 20 January 2019), the Kunstmuseum Thun (9 February – 19 May 2019), and the LENTOS Kunstmuseum, where it will be augmented with works by Austrian art brut artists.
