Now You See Me - a collaboration by Claire Collison and Liz Orton
Truth is Beauty, a life modelling performance by Claire Collison, plus an opportunity to experience life modelling for yourself.
Since deciding not to have reconstructive surgery following her mastectomy in 2014, writer, artist, and breast cancer survivor, Claire Collison has been asking:
‘Why are the thousands of women like me so hidden? What anxieties do we share as a society, where disguise is regarded as important as treatment? And how can women make informed treatment choices when there is so little representation of us within mainstream culture?’
Claire invites all women, regardless of artistic experience, to join a life-drawing session, during which she will perform a monologue linking her own experiences to life modelling and story-telling.
Drawing materials will be provided. Following Claire’s performance, there will be a discussion about the body politics of life modelling and related matters. Come draw and/or listen or join in the conversation.
This event is co-hosted by Esther Bunting of Spirited Bodies
and in the second half there is the opportunity (for those who wish) to try life modelling for yourself. Life modelling and drawing are a really good way to address body image issues, as well as gaining confidence and broadening our experience by stepping out of our comfort zones. There is guidance for new models - no experience necessary.
The event is open to all women and is a safe space for sensitive discussion about a range of topical and delicate issues. Please bring an open heart and mind! Also if you have a spare robe (and want to model) that's good too.
Drawings created during the session will be exhibited in the Gas Hall and will then be documented for display in Claire’s archive.
Please note: there will be model nudity.
Claire Collison will also be delivering her city walking tour An Intimate Tour of Breasts
