Organized by SVA Galleries, “Consumed” is on view Saturday, March 10, through Saturday, April 7, at the SVA Flatiron Gallery, 133/141 West 21st Street, New York City.Mechanical and natural systems conflate in this group of works exploring consumerism, biodegradation, consciousness and gradual decline.Tilly Griffiths (BFA Fine Arts) makes collages from automobile magazines and industrial materials catalogs—in her words, “I am claiming a traditionally male pleasure for myself as a female.”Hera HaeSoo Kim’s (MFA Fine Arts) sculptures seek to understand the void between the conscious and subconscious, and the functions of the human brain within this state of ambiguity.Jing Lin (MFA Photography, Video and Related Media) makes paintings and videos with a cleaning robot, looking at how humans are perhaps consumed and controlled by the products they invent, and whether or not machines develop a self-awareness of their own.Sydney Kaye’s (BFA Fine Arts) sculptures use natural and sustainable materials to focus on alternative medication, naturopathy and ways that nature can provide us with efficient tools to heal mind and body.Julianne Nash’s (MFA Photography, Video and Related Media) photographs are informed by her potential hereditary vision loss—“…digitally manipulated images that are difficult for the eye to comprehend.”Juried exhibitions are a way for SVA’s student body to recognize the achievements of their most distinguished classmates. Artists are selected from a large pool of applicants to the annual SVA Galleries call for entries, whose submissions undergo a rigorous examination of presented materials, including documentation of work and artist statements.
