Richard Serra

(Saturday) (Sunday)

Richard Serra, who was born in San Francisco in 1938, has been one of the most influential contemporary artists for over four decades. The exhibition turns the focus on a subset of his oeuvre that has not received the attention it merits from exhibition-makers in Europe and beyond: Serra’s films and videotapes.Between 1968 and 1979, the artist produced fifteen films and videos. They provided vital impulses for the artistic and experimental use of both media. Serra moreover recruited several people to work with him on these works who went on to distinguished careers in the fields of visual art and filmmaking, including Joan Jonas, Nancy Holt, and Babette Mangolte. On view for more than four months, the exhibition will be the first to present almost the entire material, which runs to just over five hours, in the original formats. The project aims to introduce a broader audience to Serra’s films and videos and lay the groundwork for additional scholarly research.Serra is best known for the sometimes monumental steel outdoor sculptures he has made since the 1970s; several of these works sparked public controversy. He has also created countless sculptures for indoor spaces such as the so-called Splash and Prop Pieces as well as (often site-specific) works on paper.
