After running the experimental art space called Montevideo in the old harbour in Antwerp (1980-1984) with a renowned international programme, (Mario Merz, henk Visch, Niek Kemps, Luc Deleu), the Annie Gentils Gallery opened its doors in the centre of Antwerp in 1985
A continuous platform for contemporary art was created, presenting international artists including Michel Angelo Pistoletto ('87), Stephen Willats ('91), Paul-Armand Gette (91 - 2010), Hubert Duprat, Jacques Vieille, Cécile Bart and Belgian artists Leo Copers, Guillaume Bijl, Bernd Lohaus, Luc Deleu , Filip Francis a.o.
Today, the gallery presents contemporary multimedia and conceptual work, as well as painting and sculpture and continues to show the artists it has worked with in the early nineteen eighties (Luc Deleu, Stephen Willats, Paul-Armand Gette), while we present and work with new talents - Wesley Meuris, Kris van Dessel, Els Vanden Meersch, Herman Van Ingelgem a.o. We believe it is very important for artists to have good exhibitions in the gallery every 2 years to show the evolution in the their work and allow the public to follow this evolution.
The gallery has 2 floors: this makes it possible to organise two concurrent exhibitions or to make an important solo - or group exhibition . We organize 7 to 8 main exhibitions each year.
The gallery is well known for his consistent line of quality and critical engagement. Publications and editions have supported the activities of the gallery from the early years until today.
