Sarah Oppenheimer: P-27

(Thursday) (Sunday)

Bridging art, architecture, and philosophy, the spatial modifications and interventions of Sarah Oppenheimer (b. 1972, Austin; lives in New York) generate astonishing optical effects that both scramble and clarify our understandings of the buildings we inhabit. For a new project commissioned by Pérez Art Museum Miami, Oppenheimer is developing a project involving large glass elements, which will be angled in such a way as to refract the light that enters through a window at the southeast corner of the museum’s Meyerhoff Greene Focus Gallery. The project transforms the gallery into a walk-in viewfinder, making it so that the room’s stunning vista onto Biscayne Bay is visible from multiple perspectives at once. The glass operates as a switch that changes the visual relay in response to the balance of interior and exterior light levels. The result collapses our sensations of inside and outside while blurring the boundaries between optical and kinesthetic perception, reality and visual experience.

Sarah Oppenheimer received a B.A. from Brown University and an M.F.A. in painting from Yale University. Solo exhibitions of her work have been presented at institutions including the Andy Warhol">Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh; Mass MoCA, North Adams, Massachusetts; Mudam Luxembourg; Kunsthaus Baselland, Basel, Switzerland; Baltimore Museum of Art; Rice Art Gallery, Houston; Mills College Art Museum, Oakland, CA; Saint Louis Art Museum; Queens Museum of Art; and Drawing Center, New York. A major project by Oppenheimer will be presented in 2017 at Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, OH; Selected group exhibitions of her work include projects presented at Institute for Contemporary Art, Boston; Site Santa Fe; Bard Hessel Museum, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY; Sculpture Center, Long Island City, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; and White Columns in N.Y. She is the recipient of honors including a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Fellowship and a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship.
