Location: Space02Location: Space02 The painting of American artist Terry Winters (*1949 in Brooklyn, New York, NY, lives and works in New York, NY and Columbia County, NY) deals with the description of nature in the wider sense: ‘The job of painting was to create a new object of nature, and that’s still the job description.’ In his painting he uses abstract processes to create images of a real world. In this he is interested in the capacity of the oil painting to give body to the immaterial. In the paper works Winters focuses his intentions in small formats which form a kind of database or vocabulary of form, from which the painting develops at the same time. For the project in the Kunsthaus Graz, Terry Winters devotes himself to the intersection of art and science in the museum. In an installation arrangement of his own works and exhibits from the natural science collections of the Universalmuseum Joanneum, the artist renders a networking of objects and disciplines visible, narrating the penetration of fields of knowledge. The exhibition is accompanied by a web-based project: The Graz Cabinet contains 327 links with images compiled by Terry Winters on Pinterest, a visual bookmarking tool and online pinboard. The ‘pins’ map a series of connections between the natural history collection of the Universalmuseum Joanneum, Winters’ own work, and the parameters of the Painter’s Cabinet exhibition. www.pinterest.com/studio0315/graz-cabinet Terry Winters’ works were already shown internationally in numerous group and solo exhibitions, and can be found in many collections both public and private, including the Saatchi Collection, London, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art, London, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Tate Gallery, London, and so on.Kunsthaus GrazLendkai 1
