21.10.2016 – 30.01.201721.10.2016 – 30.01.2017The exhibition »The Poetics of the Material« unites works by six artists living in Vienna. Their works are characterized not only by the range of references they make to different cultural discourses, forms of narration and representations of history and stories but also by the diverse media and materials used by them. Throughout the past few years, the critical contemplation of historicity in the broadest sense and its representations has increasingly become the focus of artistic works. Addressing this theme, artists also seek to comment on the technically unfettered production of images which shapes our present. These works resemble an answer to the observation that simulation, including the simulation of history and narratives, is more and more perceived as reality, since we increasingly move in a self-referential circle of images blurring the lines between virtuality and reality. The artists presented in the exhibition address this »agony of the real« (Jean Baudrillard), and the crisis of a classical understanding of representation that goes with it, by means of targeted sculptural and multimedia approaches that are increasingly devoted to the material aspects of artworks and these aspects’ potential for creating meaning in keeping with the so-called »material turn« in art.Through this artistic practice based on »the poetics of the material«, the observed cultural phenomena and discourses are not only commented on but are »reshaped«, resulting in the generation of new narratives. The material and the media practices of visualization become the language of new narratives often shaped by irony, which arise from the playful interrelationship between the material, medium, display and space as well as between the analysis, construction and deconstruction of various cultural contents. Thus, a new emphasis is placed on the world of tangible objects, on their esthetics and their history.Artists:
