The phrases “home sweet home,” “home is where the heart is,” “homebody” and “home away from home” all allude to home as an indefinite place. The works on view in the exhibition reflect the different strands of “home,” as defined by geography, built and virtual space, domestic life and memory.Featured works include Abby Dougherty, Michal Geva, Sara Mejia Kriendler and Chaoyu Li’s explorations of the architectural form of the home through found materials, photography, computational rendering and sculpture. Talia Link broadcasts YouTube tutorials from her bed, blurring the distinction between public and private platforms from the perspective of a domestic space. Nkiruka Oparah further abstracts the concept of home by dwelling in the virtual, complicating the idea of domesticity from a life inside a home that is always in flux.Participating artists include Abby Dougherty, MFA Fine Arts student Zoë Frederick, MFA Fine Arts student Michal Geva, Sara Mejia Kriendler (MFA 2013 Fine Arts), MFA Photography and Video student Chaoyu Li, Talia Link, Laura Lappi, Nkiruka Oparah and MFA Fine Arts student Dáreece Walker. The Master of Arts degree in Curatorial Practice is a two-year program that focuses on professional training, with a thorough grounding in the relevant study of history, research, and theory, and with an emphasis on hands-on work with leading experts in the field, along with continuous opportunities for professional networking with curators, museum directors, and other professionals from around the world. Our foremost goal is to provide practical experience and intellectual depth in order to place graduates of the program in curatorial jobs. The program takes full advantage of the vast number of arts institutions and professionals on the doorstep of the school in Chelsea and throughout New York City, which provide countless occasions for study, mentoring, and professional development. Our faculty members are all working in significant institutions in New York, with curators, museum and gallery professionals, and artists streaming into our space on 21st Street each week to talk about their exhibitions, programs, and events, meeting in an intimate setting with our small groups of students, who themselves are highly international. No other curatorial program in the world has on its faculty and at its door such an extraordinary range of professionals to teach, mentor, and connect students to the global art community.
