School of Visual Arts presents “The Book Show,” an exhibition of work by students of the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay class of 2016. Curated by department chair Marshall Arisman and faculty member Carl Nicholas Titolo, “The Book Show” is on view Saturday, September 19, through Saturday, October 10, at the SVA Gramercy Gallery, 209 East 23rd Street, New York City.An annual exhibition of the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay program, “The Book Show” challenges students to conceive, write and illustrate a book—whether a children’s book, graphic or illustrated novel, or visual essay—based on a personal experience or subject matter that is meaningful to them.Annie Bowler’s Born To Run juxtaposes animals as totems, or spiritual teachers emblematic of certain traits or characteristics, with characters from the modern world.Elberta from Alberta by Mikayla Butchart follows the mystery of Elberta, a turn-of-the-century rodeo queen who came of age on the Canadian frontier and abruptly changed her identity to start a new life.Diego Cadena’s Call for Help is a wordless comic that tells the story of three astronauts on a quest to find new fossil fuels on an orbiting asteroid.Joe Casanova’s Sweets for My Sweet is a children’s story about a young father who journeys across the galaxy in search of the finest ingredients for his daughter’s birthday cake.Mountain Province Café by Susan Coyne is a visual exploration of three New Yorkers’ lives, as told through interviews and visits to their places of work and leisure.Chioma Ebinama’s Cy’s Surprising Birth is the tale of an unusual princess, Cy, of a lonely wasteland who rebels to save her kingdom from war.Coco’s Forgotten Yams is a children’s book by Suyoun Caroline Lee about a squirrel named Coco who loses her yams.S.Y. Lee’s Miss Pinky Breaks the Couch is a picture book about a very clumsy elephant and new babysitter, Miss Pinky.Bloody Bones by Jeff Lowry is a collection of stories that re-imagines tales of monsters and creatures from Irish mythology.Claire Merchlinsky’s Darwin is a book of educational info-graphic portraits of people who have inspired thought, spread knowledge or promoted change.Robin Mørk’s Swarms combines a love of language and fascination for animal life in visualizations of collective animal groupings.High Note by Liam O’Donnell explores the intersection of imagination and improvisation through a collection of images pairing sheet music and illustrations.Joowon Oh’s A Quiet Morning is the story of a special day in the life of an old man who is living in solitude on a quiet hill in the country.Daniel Pagan’s The Dreamer is a collection of poetry and images that reflects on coming of age and maintaining a positive outlook on life.Ill Thoughts by Amelia Rosales, inspired by random events and overheard conversations during long walks on the streets,  combines philosophical images and phrases that paradoxically provide answers to the questions they ask.The Orange Tree by Vesper Stamper is a historic, young-adult graphic novella about two teens who meet on the day of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp’s liberation.Jackie Tam’s Dying Beast is a short story about the beauty of Earth and the destructive power of man, in which a mysterious healer’s healthful foods cause a king to be consumed by greed.MFA Illustration as Visual Essay at SVA is designed to maximize students’ opportunities as figurative artists, from the gallery wall to the full range of digital, print and online media. The program fuses the development of creative thinking with technical and communication skills. Additional focus is placed on best practices in navigating the visual-art marketplace while empowering students to choose art-making as a way of life.
