The unique contemporary work of quilt artist Judy B. Dales of Greensboro, Vermont, will soon be on view in Shelburne Museum’s Hat and Fragrance Gallery. The opening of the exhibition titled Judy B. Dales: Ahead of the Curve will coincide with the opening of Shelburne Museum’s grounds and gardens on May 1 and continue on view until October 31.
Dales, whose art is represented in the White House Collection of American Crafts in Washington D.C., is internationally acclaimed for her innovative use of curves, abstract designs, sensitive layering of textures, and sophisticated pairings of soft, pastel fabrics. Dale’s quilt “Dancing On The Dark Side of The Moon” (1997) was exhibited in the International Quilt Festival’s 100 Best Quilts of the 20th Century exhibition in 2000 and included in the book of the same name. Dales is currently working on an exhibition catalogue in conjunction with this exhibition.
The quilts featured in this exhibition were made during the last eighteen years and are inspired by Dales’ free-form sketches or the effects of moonlight on snowy landscapes. Her “palette is a subconscious celebration of femaleness, as well as a very conscious expression of feminism,” as she says in her artist statement and in her memoir. By embracing feminism and revitalizing the curved form in quilts, Dales continues to be ahead of the curve.
