Hans Bischoffshausen

(Friday) (Sunday)

Location: OrangerieLocation: OrangerieWith his individual material iconology and conceptual reorientation in art before and after 1968, Hans Bischoffshausen, born in Feld am See in 1927, ranks among the chief exponents of the Austrian post-war avant-garde. He arrived at his reduced and material-oriented approach by which he fathomed the limits of painting at an early date in the context of his journeys to Italy and France. Bischoffshausen developed a highly elaborate avant-gardist œuvre that is philosophically rooted in the idea of Zero. This exhibition is the first to present his series of works in new constellations, addressing artistic interdependencies with colleagues in France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. The show spans from the first fossil pictures of the 1950s to the Paris period of the Zero movement and closes with works from the 1970s and 1980s. Screening the extensive archives of Ernst and Heide Hildebrand, gallery owners and close friends of the artist, constitutes an essential basis for the accompanying publication and is part of ongoing research into post-war art. The project once again focuses on an Austrian artist whose lack of recognition in Europe is unjustified.
