Retro prospektiv: the title of the Otto Zitko exhibition refers to a perspective that embraces the future just as it was developed and honed in past confrontations. This becomes clear in this selection from Zitko’s oeuvre , comprised of works from the early 1980s through to the most recent productions. The majority of these works are from collections in Austria. They exhibit a wide range of different image carriers and of drawing and painting materials and include the rich impasto of early oil paintings on canvas, fumages and reverse glass paintings, wood panels and large-scale aluminium panels and a great number of site-specific murals.
Otto Zitko, born in Linz in 1959, studied at the Universität für angewandte Kunst in Vienna. He is the recipient of many awards, including the Otto-Mauer-Award, the Award of the City of Vienna for Visual Art and the Kulturpreis für bildende Kunst of the Province of Upper Austria.
