We Lit Up the Sky: Recent Embroideries and Lace

BFA Visual & Critical Studies is pleased to present "We Lit Up the Sky," an exhibition of recent works by artist and faculty member Amy Wilson (BFA 1995 Fine Arts). "We Lit Up the Sky" features new embroideries and lace works created by the artist, along with a temporary installation of hand-colored wallpaper and cut paper on the window that looks out on West 21st Street. In order to create her fiber pieces, Wilson uses a combination of digital and hand-working techniques, combining new technology with some of the oldest and most traditional creative processes recorded. Her fairy tale-like imagery of girls riding unicorns or turning into butterflies depict fantasies and daydreams of another world, and her stitched texts record the artist's meandering thoughts on paradise and its implications. The video monitors in the gallery window will present an overview of the artist's work.Wilson received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts (Fine Arts, 1995) and her MFA from Yale University (Sculpture, 1997). She has shown her work in numerous exhibitions in New York City and beyond, including at PS1/MOMA, the Drawing Center, the Museum at the University of Mississippi at Oxford, the Hunterdon Museum, Bravin Lee Programs and Bellwether Gallery. Her work has been written about in The New York Times, Art in America, The New Yorker, Bust magazine, and many others. In 2018 Wilson was granted a fellowship by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for her work in fibers.
