SYDNEY L. MOSS LAUNCHES 100th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS WITH NEW YORK EXHIBITION IN MARCH

(Wednesday) (Friday)

2010 is the centenary of Sydney L. Moss Ltd. and it will be marked by a series of exhibitions, catalogues and wild parties, the first of which is this exhibition in New York from 17 to 26 March 2010 at the Alexandre Gallery on the 13th floor of the Fuller Building, 41 East 57th Street, to coincide with Asia Week. This will be Sydney L. Moss’ fifth annual New York exhibition, having previously participated in the International Asian Art Fair at the Park Avenue Armory.

This New York exhibition will feature the latest inclusions in This Single Feather of Auspicious Light, Sydney L. Moss’ magnum opus publication of painstakingly selected old Chinese painting and calligraphy, which has been 5½ years in preparation. The first few copies of the 56 lb “catalogue” will be on view and available at the exhibition, for the first time anywhere. Visitors will be able to decide whether to carry it home or leave it to Fedex to mandhandle! This will be the first Chinese art book in history in which all of the Ming and Ch’ing dynasty handscrolls, albums and fans included are reproduced actual size and in the format in which they were conceived.

The sixty paintings and calligraphies on view will range in price from US$ 5,000 to over US$ 1 million, the highlight of which is an extremely large handscroll of landscape, in ink with touches of faint colour on paper, after Wu Chen (1280-1354), the inkiest of the Four Yüan Masters, depicting the extensive waterscape of West Lake, Hangchou. The painting’s original signature has been removed and, from the content of the colophons, it can be demonstrated that it was spuriously signed by Lan Ying (1585-1664 or later), presumably in boastful jest, for Wu Chen.

Also on view will be a fine and noteworthy selection of Japanese netsuke, another specialist area for which Sydney L. Moss is renowned, together with Japanese inro, lacquerwork, and pipecases. The netsuke will range in price from US$ 1,500 and US$ 165,000; inro from US$ 3,500 to US$ 75,000; and pipecases from US$ 1,000 to US$ 12,000. For other Japanese works, including fine lacquer boxes, and the Chinese literati objects (works for the scholar’s desk) in which the gallery has specialised for several years, collectors will find some splendid examples that will suit all pockets priced from US$ 5,000 to US$ 150,000.
