Pop!

(Friday) (Sunday)

Rostra Gallery’s new exhibition brings a burst of colour to the Autumn months with a nod to one of the most exciting art movements which emerged in the 1950’s. POP! will showcase new and archive works by artists that were instrumental during this period as well as artists working today that have been inspired by the groundbreaking work of the Pop Art generation.

Peter Blake is often referred to as the Godfather of British Pop Art creating work that reflects his fascination with all streams of popular culture, and the beauty to be found in everyday objects and surroundings. Many of his works feature found printed materials such as photographs, comic strips or advertising texts, combined with bold geometric patterns and the use of primary colours. The works perfectly capture the effervescent and optimistic ethos of the sixties, but are also strikingly fresh and contemporary.

Alongside Peter Blake’s work, POP! will also feature a new series of screen prints by Patrick Edgeley that use bold, hand drawn text and imagery. Americana, signs, packaging and pop culture are a great influence in on his hand printed works. A new collection of colourful ceramics by Samantha Silverton will be on display with her bold designs inspired by surface design, repeating patterns and everyday materials. Emily Lawlor’s recognisable Union Flags will also be displayed adding a splash of colour and fun with her mosaics created from recycled china.

Embrace the everyday and celebrate popular culture with the new exhibition POP! on display at Rostra Gallery until the 14th November.
