 About Artist

Markus Willeke’s paintings are boisterous and direct. His gestural brushwork is close to the impulsiveness of graffiti, the counterpoint to the physical immediacy of his paintings is American Pop art. The significance of his paintings emerges from brilliant color contrasts, the spray of colors covering the canvas as if flowing from a powerful wave. The action depicted is like a strong jolt, there without explanation. Instead, one has the impression that content is made casually, created spontaneously in the act of painting. The spontaneity of the application of paint, the brightness of colors and the alacrity and assuredness of the brushwork make Willeke’s works as magical and steadfast as fleeting and intangible. Instead of telling stories, the motifs refer much more to subcultural excesses of media inspired fantasies. The painter’s early works especially orient themselves toward icons of American pop culture that inflamed European youth culture in the 90s: cartoon characters, video game heroes, and fast food chains. The more recent works of Willeke are often marked by a borderline situation – panes of windows, the surface of water, blinds or the thicket of a field. Impenetrable barriers dominate the foreground such that what is behind remains unknown. If nothing else, painting encircles its own riddle: it is concerned with three-dimensional reality in two dimensions. We see membrane-like motifs but nevertheless remain on the surface.
