Roads to Leisure. Entertainment in the Prater and the City

(Wednesday) (Sunday)

When Leopoldstadt developed from the 1850s into a district of Jewish immigrants from the lands of the Monarchy, the area between the Danube Canal, Augarten, and Praterstern became a center of multicultural Viennese Modernism. Joseph Roth wrote in 1927: “The two main streets in Leopoldstadt are Taborstrasse and Praterstrasse. Praterstrasse is very grand, leading directly to entertainment venues. It is populated by Jews and Christians.” The exhibition “Roads to Leisure” looks at the most interesting entertainment venues, at the audiences, censorship, and the press. The stars of the urban scene, like Heinrich Eisenbach, Abisch Meisels, Gisela Werbezirk, Gertrud Kraus, and Hans Moser, also make their appearance.
