Hell according to Rodin

(Sunday) (Sunday)

The Musée Rodin is organising a new exhibition devoted entirely to The Gates of Hell.

Rodin worked all his life on this work, commissioned in 1880, and for which he took his inspiration from Dante’s Inferno. A masterpiece that was never quite completed, The Gates was, for Rodin, a repository of forms and subjects that gave rise to numerous variations, a matrix producing most notably The Thinker and The Kiss. Around 200 works will be displayed, mainly from the studio collection conserved by the museum. In the light of the latest research on the subject, the exhibition will retrace the genesis and evolution of the work, and will place it in the context of the sculptor’s career and of the time.
