Sharon Lockhart

(Saturday) (Sunday)

Who is Milena? For the American artist Sharon Lockhart (b. 1964) she is a specific friend, for the public the girl Milena stands as an example of a young person asserting herself in spite of adverse conditions of life. Sharon Lockhart, who became friends with Milena during a film project in Łodź, Poland, portrays the orphan girl’s transition from childhood to adolescence. The artist, however, does not give away the teenager’s secrets, but puts the individual story in a larger cultural context.

The remarkable friendship between Milena and Sharon Lockhart is the starting point of the exhibition at Kunstmuseum Luzern. The artist is generally interested in humans and places that have been forgotten or overlooked. For her projects she becomes part of the people’s everyday life, and creates touching portraits of individuals and social groups while applying minimalist aesthetics. For her installations Sharon Lockhart uses photographs and videos, as well as strategies and methods of documentary, anthropology and sociology.
