Two hundred and fifty years ago John Dalton - one of the most important names in the history of modern chemistry - was born in Cumbria into a modest Quaker family.
He went on to become a teacher at 12, a headmaster at 19 and delivered over 100 papers to the Literary and Philosophical Society in Manchester, of which he was made president in 1816. It was in Manchester that he developed the atomic theory that still forms the cornerstone of chemistry today.
Visit our anniversary display in the Exploring Space gallery to see Dalton's apparatus, notebooks and the first known atomic models, as well as find out more about the fascinating history of this pioneer of modern chemistry.
