"Hóngbão To Burn" (烧红包)

We’re all familiar with the saying “familiarity breeds contempt.” However, in today’s modern world of multitasking, deadlines and mobile connectivity, it might be more accurate to say, “familiarity breeds blindness.” This is to say that when we become so used to something, we stop noticing it as our brains push it out of the way in search of ever more disk space to process the constant incoming flood of information that we bombard it with daily. As a result, we see less and less of our surroundings. That lamppost, invisible, that storefront, invisible, that traffic light, barking dog, speeding car, neighbor, all invisible. Certainly, a non-descript blue lorry motoring past will get lost along with everything else, for what is it but a delivery truck? One of thousands like it that leave the hive each day like so many worker bees, heading out to buzz about hither and yon, dropping this off and picking that up. They pass in the background of your mind every day, but on this day, you and your over-familiarized brain got fooled. Because a closer look, would reveal that this non-descript lorry is in fact, anything but. It’s a party on wheels and the only thing this driver is picking up today might be more party supplies for the good times, which appear ready to rage until the Chinese New Year and beyond. So, familiarity is not your friend. Especially today when that non-descript delivery truck speeding up to the red light is actually a full on party machine. You don’t see it, let’s just hope that, with all the partying going on, they see you. It’s a toss up, so good luck to you. You might need it today.
