"Pataclop"

Liu Dao

Onomatopoeia is defined as 1) the formation of a word, as cuckoo, meow, honk, or boom, by imitation of a sound made by or associated with its referent 2) a word so formed 3) the use of imitative and naturally suggestive words for rhetorical, dramatic or poetic effect. Onomatopoeias are quite strange in that the word itself is not itself…if that makes sense. Onomatopoeia is not an onomatopoeia. I doubt anyone as ever made a noise that sounded like that. No, this odd word is actually derived from Latin onoma meaning “name” withpoiein meaning “to make”. Literally taken, the word means “to make a name”. That's not quite descriptive enough though. I think perhaps it would clear things up a bit to add the Latin roots for “from” which isex and “sound” which is sonitus. Maybe something likeOnomatopoeiaexsonitus would be a little better. OrPoieinsonitusexonoma has quite a ring to it. This all begs the question though- if I just made these words is it a form of onomatopoeia? This text was supposed to explain what pataclop means but I have run out of space so I suppose your imagination will have to do that for you.
