"More Than Most" (岂止于多)

Liu Dao

I have a little more wear on me than most but it’s quite fine I think. It indicates to others that I’ve been around a while and am rather durable. Every morning I go up and every evening I come down. I see awful things sometimes at night- fights and robberies, people bumping into me, throwing things at me… even trying to scar and mark me just for fun. Every now and then someone will come along and try to open me up when it is very clearly not time for me to be opened. It usually bangs me up pretty good, but attempts have always been unsuccessful. The amount of marks and scars I have are indicative to me of a job well done. I can only speculate that people must really want whatever is behind me if they’re willing to wail against my walls and try to break me open to get at it. No one appreciates a worn down ragged thing anymore though. And why would they, after a life of being cozy behind a gate or wall. It’s oh so easy to hate that ugly guard I guess, until you need one.
