"Inherently Blue" (自然是蓝)

Liu Dao

“Blue has no dimensions; it is beyond dimensions, whereas the other colours are not... All colours arouse specific associative ideas... while blue suggests at most the sea and sky, and they, after all, are in actual, visible nature what is most abstract.” [Yves Klein]
Yet even though blue is often associated with the ocean and the sky, the color often holds more emotional and spiritual value to the human eye as well. “Feeling blue” for example, is an expression that can be used to describe somebody as feeling down, or feeling sad. Here I must ask, what is sad about a blue sky, or a blue ocean? Many families will travel miles and miles on weekend trips just to throw down some towels by the ocean and picnic there for a day; and what a pleasant day it would be, sitting by the ocean with the sound of waves crashing in and the sun’s golden rays shimmering along the beach. Yet blue has always been a very emotional color, an infinite perception of depth in the rich tones of blue which gives blue the ability to embody so many things, so many emotions. Well it seems that Mr. Klein was right about at least one thing: blue is beyond dimensions. After all life did evolve from the ocean, which is a body of water that is inherently blue; blue before you and I, blue long after we leave.
