Who looks after the stuff?

(Saturday) (Saturday)

The Museum’s team of twenty conservators work to clean, stabilise, restore and investigate a multitude of different types of objects and specimens, from huge working machines to microfossils, oil paintings to photographs, Viking swords to mobile phones, and harps to 18th century ballgowns!

An important part our work with objects is finding out about them – what they’re made of, how they were made and what has happened to them. Using both traditional and the very latest scientific methods and equipment, conservators often uncover fascinating hidden stories about objects and about the people who made and used them.

For the second time, the Museum’s conservators will take over the Main Hall and showcase our work in displays and family-friendly activities. Look through layers to investigate paintings, discover why the goats glitter, learn how light harms objects, and see how we find out what an ancient artefact is made from without touching it!

Join us to learn more about the detective work of conservation and take part in some investigations of your own!
