Hannah Black‘s works focus on themes like gender, identity, and race—categories that the artist challenges through her use of pop cultural media. How can socially constructed concepts like the body and gender be overcome, and what happens when they are suspended. The answers to questions like these are always left for the viewers to find themselves.Language, sound, and image are closely interlinked in Black’s practice. She is especially interested in overlaps and stalemates between the forces of social coercion and representations of reality based on experience, world history and personal history. She combines autobiographical moments with theoretical material. These elements are presented by means of contemporary visual idioms shaped by celebrities, pop songs, and Google image searches.For her solo show at mumok the artist is developing an installation that highlights the political ambivalence of the idea of a common human ancestry and that looks at questions of collective identity and the political instrumentalization of heritage and origin.
